The I–Band Tully–Fisher Relation and the Hubble Constant

چکیده

The application of the I band Tully–Fisher relation towards determining the Hubble constant is reviewed, with particular attention to the impact of scatter and bias corrections in the relation. A template relation is derived from galaxies in 24 clusters. A subset of 14 clusters with cz ∼ 4000 to 9000 km s is used as an inertial frame to define the velocity zero point of the relation. Twelve galaxies with Cepheid distances are used to establish the absolute magnitude scale of the Tully–Fisher relation, and thus to determine a value of H◦ = 70 ± 5 km s −1 Mpc . Estimates of the peculiar velocities of the Virgo and Fornax clusters are also given. Assuming that the distance to Fornax is 18.2 Mpc (N1365), H◦ = 76± 8 km s −1 Mpc . Assuming that Virgo lies at 17.4 Mpc (M100, N4496, N4639), H◦ = 67± 8 km s −1 Mpc .

X. H0 from the inverse B-band Tully-Fisher relation using diameter and magnitude limited samples

We derive the value of H0 using the inverse diameter and magnitude B-band Tully-Fisher relations and the large all-sky sample KLUN (5171 spiral galaxies). Our kinematical model was that of Peebles centered at Virgo. Our calibrator sample consisted of 15 field galaxies with cepheid distance moduli measured mostly with HST. A straightforward application of the inverse relation yielded H0 ≈ 80 km ...

The Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale Xxiv: the Calibration of Tully–fisher Relations and the Value of the Hubble Constant

This paper presents the calibration of BVRIH−0.5 Tully–Fisher relations based on Cepheid distances to 21 galaxies within 25 Mpc, and 23 clusters within 10,000 km s−1. These relations have been applied to several distant cluster surveys in order to derive a value for the Hubble constant, H0, mainly concentrating on an I–band all–sky survey by Giovanelli and collaborators which consisted of total...

On the derivation of the Tully-Fisher relations

The Hubble constant H0 should not show distancedependence. An inappropriate use of the direct Tully-Fisher relation may lead to a conclusion that H0 is dependent on the distance. This paper tries to answer the question: is it possible to avoid the caveats of the direct relation by applying the inverse Tully-Fisher relation. Under ideal conditions it is possible simultaneously to determine the i...

Hubble Constant at Intermediate Redshift using the CO-Line Tully-Fisher Relation

We have determined distances and Hubble ratios for galaxies at intermediate redshifts, cz ∼ 10, 000 to 35,000 km s−1 , by applying the CO-line TullyFisher relation to our CO (J = 1 − 0)-line observations using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope, and near-IR (NIR) photometry in the J and H bands using the 1.88-m telescope at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. By averaging the Hubble ratios from J-band ...

Using the near infrared fluxes of local galaxies derived from Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE)/Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) J(1.25 μm) K (2.2 μm) & L (3.5 μm) band maps and published Cepheid distances, we construct Tully-Fisher diagrams for the nearby galaxies. The measured dispersions in these luminosity-linewidth diagrams are remarkably small: σJ = 0.09 magnitudes, σK = 0.1...
